CIIS Student Wins Award at WA Oceanafest 2013

College of Innovation and Industry Skills (CIIS) Certificate IV in Hospitality student, Rabia Khashif, won silver and bronze medals at the recent  Perth Oceanafest held at the Perth Convention Centre. This prestigious  competition is staged annually by The Australian Culinary Federation of Western Australia (ACFWA) and  is now recognised by the World Association of Chefs Societies (WACS) as a continental event, subject to WACS competition rules & guidelines. Participating in this  major industry event saw Rabia, an international student from Pakistan,  competing against chefs from around the country  in a series of structured cooking activities. She was ably supported in this endeavour by CIIS chef trainers, Beat Tobler and Gordon Landy, who contributed their expertise in training Rabia for competition.

Rabia's achievements  - and those of her chef-trainers - were acknowledged and celebrated today at a presentation held at the CIIS  college campus in Gosnells where she was presented  with a $500.00 scholarship towards her future Diploma of  Hospitality studies. The scholarship, which was sponsored by CIIS, was presented by Mr Larry Davies,WA Executive Officer and ACPET Board Member. In an address to staff members, students and industry representatives,  Mr  Davies warmly praised Rabia's success in the competition and affirmed the importance of the private VET sector in training international students to the highest professional standards. This sentiment was echoed by college CEO, Mr Parampreet Singh, who emphasised that  CIIS is committed to excellence in training. The calibre of  staff, students and programs at CIIS has been recognised in a number of industry awards, including Finalist in the WA International Training Provider of the Year (2010 and 2012). Individual CIIS students have also been highly successful:  the Landscape Industry Association WA award for Best Student in Construction in 2011 went to a CIIS student, and a CIIS student progressed to the  finals in the ACPET 2012 Student of the Year Award for Excellence.
